Kids with Cameras was founded in 2002 by photographer Zana Briski out of her work teaching photography to children in Calcutta's red-light district. She and filmmaker Ross Kaufman decided to document the painful story of these children and their efforts culminated in the 2005 Academy Award Winning film for Best Documentary Feature, Born into Brothels. Their chartible organization was founded to support the education of these children and has provided them with a path to leave the red-light distict.
The Getty Museum has long supported photography as an art and retains one of the largest pre-eminent collection of photographs. In 2006, they announced a marked expansion of their photographic exhibit space and reaffirmed their committment to the preservation of color photographs.
Similarly, the Cleveland Museum of Art, celebrates the creative achievement of photographers worldwide through their extensive high quality collection which includes Daguerreotype portraits and massive glass-plate landscapes of the 1800's to 20th century spontaneous street shots.
Together, these foundations help recognize not only the history but creative impact of photography has on our lives today.
